Summonsing to Service

If you have received a quarterly summons, you have been selected, at random, as a prospective petit juror by the United States District Court, Southern District of West Virginia. The summons gives you the period of service and dates that you will be "on call" as a prospective juror. If you are selected to report during your "on call" quarter, you will receive a Notice to Appear for Petit Jury Service which will give you a specific date and time to report for service.

Next Steps:

  1. Confirm or update your information. You can save time by verifying and completing your information online through our eJUROR system;
  2. Request an excuse, if necessary. Excuses may either be temporary or permanent and are granted on a limited basis. Requests must be submitted, in writing, prior to the start of your "on call" period. Medical excuse requests must be accompanied by a current physician's statement. Do not assume an excuse request will be granted. Please, do not call requesting to be excused;
  3. Wait until you are notified to appear. If selected to report, the jury department will notify you, usually one week in advance of the trial date by an official Notice to Appear for Petit Jury Service and/or a telephone call. As a reminder, federal law requires you to be available to report at any time during your three-month term.
